I guess I'm looking at this from an engineering viewpoint. When comparing airframes, I actually work out the drag profile of the airframe, power output of the engine, efficiency curves of props and...

If you're getting sub 0.40 with that 540, don't let anyone steal that engine from you. That's awesome performance for a small air cooled engine.

I know people talk about the Thielert diesels...

Leather is better

I dress in green to go fly, but wear a leather jacket to work each day. With rank on the epaulet bars, I think it is sharper than anything else.

As an aside, we used to be approved to wear them to...

Thielert

They're getting a 2000 hr TBO for the 2.0L. The 1.7L seems to be stuck with 1000hrs.

No flying hours on EJ yet, just ground hours. Pulled from a rollover Outback and stripped, checked and rebuilt....

RV-8 Ugly?

A lot of ugly shots at the poor -8 here. Each to their own I guess. My own top five is as follows:

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V
Canadair Sabre Mk.6
Vans RV-8
NA P-51
DH Vampire FB.5 (yes, I know it...

Good point

Airguy,

I stand corrected, "fuel flow" is indeed correct for a diesel. Higher fuel flow may result in higher MAP for a Turbo D (more energy through the turbo so higher boost), but the true...

Richard,

Here's the engineer's (simple?) description of how this works.

Diesels don't generate higher compression through longer strokes. They simply have less space between the piston and the...

Yes, typo

Kevin,

Yes, this is a typo. 25% is the reduction in fuel burn in lb/hr/hp.

Subie Diesel

I know of a suitable computer geek that would probably sort out the coding problem over lunch (he's a VW/Audi tuner that runs a DTM team in Germany and chipped my uncle's Skoda Octavia).

Having...

160hp

They ran the first 160 on a dyno ages ago and were expecting first deliveries in 2005. Anyone know what happened or did the LSA 100 engine get in the way?

Liquid cooled

I currently have a Subaru EJ25/Warp drive combo on my RAF 2000 Gyro. Having followed the progress of Eggenfellner Aircraft and watched the Subie scene, I've become a fan. Flat 4/6, bulletproof...

Diesel/Avtur is the future. Single fuel and more performance!

Gents,

If I may add my two (or three) bits worth, comparing the Lycosaurus Cessnas with the Thielert versions is not quite like with like.

The diesel has a CS prop, where most Lycoming versions are...
