Ground plane NOT needed...

GPS antennas (GA 35, GA 36, etc.) do not require a ground plane as they are NOT a "monopole" type antenna.

Don't believe me? Mount it to a piece of cardboard and watch it pick up the satellite...

These are AN3 bolts with the load in shear. You should be able to snug them up to "titenuf" using your normal 3/8" wrenches (or 3/8 & 1/4 if using MS21042 nuts...)

Don't get wrapped around the axle...

I walk over to the avionics shop, borrow their laptop with the Garmin toolchain and recent firmware image, then walk back to my hangar, plug my GTX 345 into the USB cable and run the tool.
