Just Moved to Michigan - Looking For Community
Hey guys
We just moved to the Greater Detroit area and I am looking for a place to fly that has great community and good facilities and I would love to meet fellow RVers. We live in Grosse Pointe and I work in Dearborn. Willow Run and Troy are both workable, with the former being closer to work and the latter to home. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on the area? Any fellow RVers care to introduce themselves either here or by private message? Looking forward to getting to know you folks. Antony |
Michigan is an interesting place
I lived at Gull Lake and in Battle Creek in my youth (7th, 8th & 9th grades) for 3 years and I loved it. Very strong outdoors culture - and independent strong people. The only time I ever rode an iceboat was on Gull Lake - what a rush! I flew into Battle Creek a few years ago and the raw charm was still there. We have driven through Detroit into Canada for a visit to Niagara falls, I used to make business trips to Bay City for McDonnell Aircraft and my wife and I have flown across the UP into Mackinac Island and stayed at the Grand Hotel - it's all good. I tend to be not so social but I'm sure you will find what you are looking for there - enjoy.

I'm guessing Terry Kohler in Pontiac hasn't replied yet because he's out flying with his buds. Great group of guys up there!
PS: Terry, we'll be back in Ann Arbor/Chelsea for the Christmas holidays again this year... |
Have You Checked EAA for Local Chapters?
Not sure about KDET, but Ray Community (57D) has probably the most active chapter in Michigan, number 13. They meet the first Thursday of every month and nearly always have an interesting guest speaker. Normally about 60-70 members in attendance. Also very active in Young Eagles. They have a website, if you want more info. We probably have 10-15 experimentals at KPTK, but no active EAA chapter. DAR Ted Gauthier is also located at Pontiac.
Give me a call if you need more info (248-417-8585). Hey Miles... Give us a shout if you have time during your visit. Still not certain, but we may be flying down to Ft. Hood to visit the kids at Christmas. Older daughter still in Okinawa until next summer. That's a little too much, even for an RV. Best, Terry, CFI RV9A N323TP |

Would love to know more
Thanks Terry. I will check into Ray Community. It seems to be about 45 minutes from my house.
I would love to hear from more people in the area. Thanks in advance. |
Give Mettetal airport a try (1D2). It's located in Plymouth and has a great EAA chapter www.eaa113.org

KDET
Welcome!
There are three RV's at KDET. My 7A and Dick Green's 6A are adjacent in the SW Tees area accessed via the French Rd. Gate, just N of Gratiot. Dave Durakovich is or was on the Conner side. There was a Tuskegee Airmen EAA chapter at KDET, but I lost contact with them and I don't know if they are still there. There is a CAP operation, though; they fly yellow motor gliders which were contributed by the AF. We also have a Glasair in the SW area. PM or email me if you want to meet. Dick is a chapter 13 officer and I'm a former member. The fuel at KDET is provided only by the FBO (self serve pumps are not operating). KDET is closest to your home and Mettetal is closest to Dearborn. Coming from GP, use I-94 wb and exit at Conner (no French Rd. exit westbound), north on Conner, southwest on Gratiot to French, north on French or set your GPS to 10,000 French Rd. But be aware the airport is "secure", meaning someone must allow you in and escort you. |
Thanks!
Thanks everyone. I will be exploring the airports you mention over the next few weekends to see what they are like.

CHECK OUT EAA 1093
They maybe too far away for you but might be a great distination airport. You can't find a better group anywhere around.

Flying Anyone?
It's a beautiful day to fly in MI, so I was trying to find an interesting destination. Does anyone have any suggestions? The west coast looks beautiful, but that's a little far in a Cessna today. Are there other pretty stretches of coast or interesting destinations closer by? I'm missing my Maine stomping grounds a bit today.

I would say come to KPYM but it's too windy today to have a pleasant flight.
See you soon pal! :) CJ |
If I had speed
Hey John,
If I had this project finished and 200 mph under me that might be a possibility for a weekend flight ;) |
Soon enuff... soon enuff!
;) CJ |
Me too
Hi Anthony,
I too am in the Detroit area, living 6nm south of KYIP. Building -8, emp about half done so I have quite a while to go yet, but banging away at it. Stay in touch, love to meet for lunch one day, Dave. |
I second the vote to check out chapter #113 - It's been 14+ years since I was last a member there, but that's where I attended meetings (Wednesday nights?)... Moved to CA long ago... Miss many friends from MI, but don't miss the 'no fault' car insurance.
P.S. Are you going to work for Ford? Chris |
I live in Grosse Pointe Woods and am building a RV-12. We must be practically neighbors. I will be going to Chapter 13's March meeting this Thursday, March 1st. You are welcomed to drive up with me to Ray Community Airport. Chapter 13 has a great group of fellow pilot who will make you feel at home. The Chapter's website is http://www.eaachapter13.org/
The Chapter will be hosting at our meeting the FAA Pilot Proficiency (Wings) Program on Aeronautical Charts which the FAA is co-sponsoring. John B. Kean John@JohnKean.com 313 310-7879 |
