2200 Hour Report and Pics

Just back from Big Sky, Teddy Roosevelt NP, and Iowa Trips. Hobbs flipped over 2,200, so I dropped the oil.

Filter and screen had some carbon chunks, and the filter had just a tiny amount of fuzz attracted to a neodymium magnet.

Compressions were 77-78-77-77. Valves looked pretty good!

We are going to continue to run and watch her carefully. Local A&P says many O-320s will go 2,600 hrs+ if they get flown.

The combustion side is looking great, I assume the oil sample analyses remaining consistent?

Analysis

Hi Bill,

I have not pulled a sample for analysis in a bit. I will do that.

Vlad 09-02-2019 09:10 PM

Nice looking valves Pete. Keep it running don't stop. Watch closely do not abuse it. I personally know a motor like yours making double time +. ;)

What Bore scope?

I bet you have been asked before, but those are some very good photos. What bore scope are you using? PC/ android or Iphone /Mac to record them?

long live the 320!

DeeCee 57 09-03-2019 09:24 AM

... wild guess, a VA-400 or 800?

Long live all the used engines ;)

looks good

keep going and monitor. thanks for the valve documentary.

The pipeline patrol company at our airport runs their O-320's 4,000 hours. No problems at overhaul. They do oil analysis, and all the accessories get changed on a time schedule. I looked at one the other day that had over 3,000 hours on it and it was still getting 12-13 hours out of a quart of oil with the original cylinders. You can imagine how much they fly, and that is probably the main reason the engines are going so far.

Forget Lean or green, I'd say those valves are CLEAN of peak :D

2300 Hour report!

Not much has changed at 2300 hours. She is still running great.
  • Filter and screen had some carbon chunks, nothing more.
  • Compression #'s were 77-76-77-78 with a warm engine. Valves looked pretty good!
  • As mentioned previously - We are going to continue to run and watch her carefully.

Valve Porn - the cheapo camera was not super sharp this time, but did the trick

impressive!

Great work Pete - whatever you are doing, keep doing it! :) Do you feel that the cleanliness of your valves is due to running unleaded fuel? Did you ever get around to the oil analysis? What kind of oil do you run? Any additives?

tthrew 06-29-2020 05:02 PM

Oil consumption?

Hi Pete - what is your oil consumption and what level are you running? Oil separator? Thanks

petehowell 06-29-2020 07:39 PM

Mogas....

Hi Mickey,

I do think that mogas keeps things cleaner, but I think it is observational and can't quantify it.

Sadly I forgot to buy the oil analysis kit. Maybe next time.

I have only run Phillips XC 20W-50 from hour zero. It has worked well for me.

100 only hours in 10 months Pete? Head my way lets go backcountry :)

petehowell 06-29-2020 07:51 PM

5Qts

Hi Tim,

I have been running 5 qts since about hour 100. Any more just blows out the breather very quickly - I do not run an oil separator.

I use about 1-2 qt per 50 hours, it has been that way since she broke in. I usually need about 1/2 qt at 25 hours and 1/2 qt at 35 or 40. I just keep it at the 5 qt line on my dipstick. My guess is the viscosity improvers start to breakdown, but I am no petro chemist. I'm sure there is someone here that can explain it.

we tried!

Vlad,

We were headed to Idaho - but the wx this week was not tent camping friendly and work got in the way. We have another window in August.

Curious how your plugs look.

turbo 06-30-2020 09:11 AM

have you ever done any measurements on wobble test?

Heya Pete -

I hesitate to call it a full blown separator - it's more of a breather - but it lets me run 8qts without putting anything on the belly and best of all I put it together in an afternoon with metal I had leftover from the build (recognize part of a trimmed push tube? :-) Happy to share more if you'd be interested.
