RV-14 inverted flight
Anyone can tell me anything about inverted flight fuel supply in RV14?

Are you going with a stock FWF?
It depends on what you plan to install FWF.
A friend's RV-14 has the EFII system, this uses dual electric fuel pumps. As far as fuel goes as long as the fuel tank has a flop tube for pickup the rest of the EFII system doesn't care/know it's inverted. Are you looking for sustained inverted flight or sportsman level aerobatics? |

I wonder if you'll be happy with how the -14's airfoil works inverted. I recall years ago hearing Van say that one reason he selected the 23000 series NACA section for the 3/4/6/7/8 models is because it works reasonably well inverted. I suspect the -14 airfoil won't do too well inverted since it had very different design goals (originally designed for the -10). Anybody have any data points on how it flies inverted?
The mission of the 14 is more geared toward comfortable XC and oh by the way you can also do loops, rolls, and spins, but if you're wanting to do more serious acro including negative G I'd recommend a 7 or 8. |
I asked to Van's the same question. The answers were : the fuel tanks don't accept flop tubes and the '14 pass the positive G aerobatic figures. So any fuel and oil inverted system is required.

I don't think you need anything beyond stock for occasional loops and rolls?

If the aerobatics you are doing are all positive G's (required to keep the engine running and healthy if no inverted fuel and oil system is installed) then there is no need to do anything different with the brake reservoir cap.
The same (positive G) forces that keep the oil and fuel in the proper place will do the same with the brake fluid as well. BTW, an inverted fuel pick-up capability was never planned for the design of the RV-14 because its primary mission profile is cross country travel with the ability to get upside down occasionally if desired (for 99.9% of people that means positive G's aerobatics only). The standard fuel pick-up design works fine for this. For the other .1%, they could redesign the fuel pick-up to a flop tube installation. |
