Oil and Filter at 50 - as recommended by the manufacturer. With three airplanes and traveling as much as we do, I'd be an oil (disposal) company stock holder if I did it more frequently....

Paul forgets the other Lycoming oil change requirement because he flys so much....:)

The Lycoming service bulletin also has a 4 month oil change requirement if you don't reach the 50 hrs.

I'm a 25 hour guy too

I usually do both the oil and filter at 25 plus cam guard. I don't fly as often as I'd like, so it ends up being twice a year.

Oil Change

Hello Gents

Thanks a lot for the replies.

The 25 hrs / o?l change and the 50 hrs / o?l & filter change are what I had in mind.

I had a screen only filtering system on my 0-320 E2D and I used to do the o?l changes every 25 hrs but I recently installed a filter adapter and was curious to know what o?l change schedule most of you used.

I also used a can of Avblend with every o?l change.

Also, what are you Guys doing once you've dump the o?l and need to replace the filter? Do you punch a hole in it so it drains better or do you just wait for it to drain completly.

With the location of the filter on a -4, any advise to prevent a mess is welcome..

Thanks again for the info

Cheers

Keep in mind, 30hrs Hobbs is really 25. I do 30/35 hr changes with filter every other time. Oil is cheap. MMO added also. Each to there own.

Obviously I have a different take on oil/filter changes then many here, but I will never change oil and run it through a dirty filter.
I will always change the filter any time I change the oil.

I'm with Mel on this one. I would never change the oil without changing the filter. I also drain the oil cooler at each oil change to get rid of as much dirty oil as possible. I use the 50 hour interval for my RV-8

Not aircraft engines but as another data point I know most long haul diesel trucks change their filter between oil changes....

How much are the filters ? Is it really a big deal to just change it.

You let it drain in a bucket, then you use your oil filter cutting tool to take it apart and examine it for debris.

Around $20. No it is not a big deal, but it is easy to make a mess, or to stab yourself with the safety wire!
