Sharing 3D files

Any chance of sharing your files (both idea #1 and #2) on the mirror mounts?

I use Fusion 360 if you have those, as I would love to see how you progress through the History bar in building up your design. You seem to have a gift with an elegant design.

If you don't use 360, I could use an STL file as well.

you can have them when I finish the project. I've been side tracked with a diamond shaped seat bike post for a very expensive carbon fiber bike for a friend. I should finish that tomorrow then get back to the mirror project. FYI, the seat post ABS material is wrapped with fiberglass and is very strong. the original carbon fiber seat post failed at the seat fastener attachment because of poor design.

I use Solidworks but I can send the .stl files or a parasolid.

Not needed

Thanks, but I got so impatient (it's a me thing), that I went ahead and made them in Fusion.

When I tried Solidworks, I found it very difficult to learn. That's saying something, as I am a techie since the mid-seventies. I built my own RF Modulator to connect my then Apple ][ to my TV. (Good Lord I am getting old)

Being a pilot and not ever wanting to spend a penny on non-aviation things, I tried the EAA free license for Solidworks. It was like walking through peanut butter for me, it was just not working. I noticed yesterday, that I could get Autodesk Fusion 360 on a Mac for free (it is free to students and individuals), and it took maybe an hour to learn a decent amount.

Yesterday, I made a bracket for my EFII units in about an hour, and today I did the Mirror Brackets in about 2 hours. Fusion 360 is very slick. Here is the result:

I don't mean to lessen the value of the work you are putting in, as I know the iterations between concept and build can get huge, but I just wanted to share with the rest of VAF that maybe tried Solidworks and gave up, to give Fusion 360 a try.

ready for first print but the printer is busy banging out fuel drain fairings for Oshkosh. I'll bring ~50 pair of drain fairings for the Sunday beer bash and throw the box under my wing after that. $3 a pair.

I'm a Fusion user but that's because I was on a project and everyone else was using it so that's what I learned. All CAD has a learning curve.

Love both designs of the mirror holder. I need to find a source of plastic mirror and learn how to form the curve.

Chuck, something to remember - creating a model is one thing. Creating a model that will print well and efficiently is another thing. My "altimeter desk display" only took about an hour to design. Then I had three failed prints - two printer setup issues and one complexity in my model. The final print went smoothly, albeit 18 hours :eek:

Is the back side of the acrylic mirror stock a flat gray or charcoal color? If so, it should be no problem to laser cut.

In Steve's mockup and rendering, the mirror is concave. How easy is it to warm/heat and form the curve? Does the mirror hold up to the distortion?

Mirror Mount Suggestion
Just a thought, it could be as simple as a tube connection like your design presently shows, with a bond pad. The bond pad would glue to the mirror.

The advantage would be that it would eliminate the unsightly mounting tangs that are visible.
