GMA 245 vs GMA 245R

We are extremely excited to announce two new additions to our family of audio panels for the experimental and LSA markets! The GMA 245 and GMA 245R hardware is identical with a few notable exceptions. The most obvious difference is the lack of panel mount controls on the GMA 245R. Both units have a USB charging port and can be integrated with G3X Touch. Since the GMA 245 has dedicated music and intercom volume knobs, there are also slight differences in the G3X Touch user interface which will be highlighted below. Other than these exceptions, all features highlighted in this posting can be universally applied to the GMA 245 and GMA 245R. Minimum advertised pricing (MAP):

GMA 245 - $1325
GMA 245R - $1199

GMA 245

The GMA 245 is a panel-mount audio panel with a rich set of convenient and simple-to-use controls, for standalone use or integrated with the G3X? Touch flight display. The panel-mount GMA 245 incorporates dedicated music and intercom volume control knobs, a backlit keypad and more. The Bluetooth-enabled audio panel boasts superior sound quality and an impressive list of additional features, such as advanced auto squelch, music bass boost, advanced equalizer settings, 3D Audio processing, wireless integration with the VIRB? XE action camera and more. While extremely powerful as a standalone audio panel, when interfaced to the G3X Touch flight display, more control is given for audio configuration and music distribution.

The G3X Touch user interface mimics traditional panel mount audio panel controls and status lights and allows the pilot to choose whether the panel mount GMA 245 controls or the G3X Touch controls will be used. The G3X Touch user interface unlocks additional functionality, but it?s hard to beat dedicated audio panel controls, especially when it has dedicated music and intercom volume controls. Once you experience the convenience and utility of being the pilot of an aircraft where you get to control your music volume independent of others, even if you are listening to the same music source, you will wonder why anyone ever designed an audio panel user interface any other way.

A full time display of the Audio button as well as MIC and COM selections is provided across the top of the display. Touching the dedicated MIC field will toggle both MIC and COM selections between Comm 1 and Comm 2 radio sources. Touching the dedicated COM field toggles monitoring of the inactive Comm on and off. Touching the Audio button brings up a touchscreen user interface with multiple tab selections. The first tab is Radios, which provides alternate control of COM and MIC selections as well as Nav and Speaker audio. It also provides access to a clearance recorder Play button that will provide up to 60 seconds of audio playback in case you miss a radio call. You can even skip back through older audio clips.

Touching the More Options? button gives you access to the three auxiliary audio inputs. The auxiliary audio input names can be customized based on the audio source if desired. Turning the Monitor Mute function on will mute the radio frequency that is currently being monitored if a call comes in on the active frequency.

From the Intercom tab, you can turn on and off the pilot and crew isolate functions which will be annunciated on the dedicated Audio button when active. The GMA 245 intercom is the next evolution of the GTR 20 and 200 series intercom which has set a very high standard for audio quality.

From the Phone & Media tab, you can Bluetooth® pair your portable device directly to the audio panel which allows you to control media and phone functionality when available through the device (e.g. telephone would not be checked unless you pair a cell phone). In the example below, an iPhone is paired to the GMA 245 giving you the ability to start and stop the Media player as well as skip forward and back tracks. You can also see the cell phone signal strength and battery status.

Since a phone is paired in this example, you will see incoming phone calls, can answer or ignore the phone call directly from the Phone & Media tab and even adjust your call volume. The phone number or caller id (if available from your phone), will be shown as well. If the Telephone Audio is active, you will hear the telephone audio in your headset (and hear the telephone ring). Whether you have the audio active or not, you will receive a visual cue on the Audio button at the top of the display which displays TEL with a blue background. The following screenshots show a call being answered through the G3X Touch display (which automatically enables the telephone audio).

After answering the call, the display will show Call Active.

From the Music Input tab, the audio distribution and control of the G3X Touch integration really shines. In the first example below, the Distribution is set to Normal. So audio sources for all positions (pilot, co-pilot, and passengers) will be the same. The Music button toggles the audio on and off and the Source button pulls up a drop down list to select various audio sources.

When the Distribution mode is switched from Normal to Advanced, pilot, co-pilot and passengers can all choose their own audio sources and volumes. The dedicated pilot/copilot music volume knobs on the GMA 245 adjust the pilot and co-pilot volume while the passenger volume is adjusted through the on screen display.

GMA 245R

The remote-mounted GMA 245R was designed specifically for integration with the G3X Touch system for a sleek installation. Other than the exceptions previously noted, it has all the same features and capabilities outlined for the GMA 245. Since the GMA 245R does not have dedicated knobs for pilot and co-pilot/pass music and intercom volume, there are two key differences in the G3X Touch user interface.

First, on the Intercom tab, the GMA 245R user interface includes volume controls for Pilot, Copilot and Passengers.

Rack and Pin Compatible

The GMA 245 is rack and pin-compatible with the GMA 240, GMA 340 and third-party audio panels for experimental aircraft. For G3X Touch installations, the only wiring change is adding a CAN bus connection to 2 previously reserved pins on one of the two GMA 245 connectors. You can literally remove a GMA 240/340 audio panel, insert the GMA 245 into the same rack, and turn it on!

As usual, if you have any questions or feedback, please contact a Garmin dealer or reach us directly using the information in our signature line below.

Thanks!
Brian

Brian,

Does the GMA 245/245R fit the same rack as the GMA 240 and use the same pinnout/connections realizing that there is most likely a few more pins required for the CAN bus?

Also I see some sort of bracket on the bottom of the 245R pic, can you explain this? Can the 245R be both rack mounted in place of a traditional Audio Panel or remote mounted?

EDIT:

Found this in the news release...

"Contributing to an easy and convenient upgrade path, the GMA 245/245R is rack and pin-compatible* with the GMA 240, GMA 340 and third-party audio panels for experimental aircraft. ****, I'm not sure if that is good or bad.... :)

Changing wiring would have been a good excuse not to upgrade.

Anyone want to buy a GMA 240.

This is the second time I've posted this today, but this is WORD FOR WORD what I've been telling Stein that I want!

Guess it's time to get rid of the only non-Garmin device in my panel! I only made it 6 months before the first panel upgrade...

Brian,
A couple of questions:
  1. In reference to the 3D audio functionality, I have an SL-30 NAV/COM. Will the 3D audio separate the primary and secondary frequency "direction" when receiving a radio broadcast from the SL-30 primary and secondary frequencies, or does this 3D audio only separate sounds from two distinctly different radio sources?
  2. My current panel configuration does not utilize a traditional audio tray configuration as I have a PMA 3000 intercom mounted on the far right of the panel above the passenger air vent in the RV9A. If I replace the 3000 I would like to think I could mount this new 245 in that location, assuming there is space. Can you provide the LxWxH dimensions of the unit with/without the tray? Also, does it need to be mounted in a tray or can it be mounted independent of the tray?

Thanks for any light you can shed on these questions.

Also, explain the wireless integration to the Virb!

Does this mean that you can send cockpit audio to be recorded on a Virb without cables? Cause that would be AWESOME! Cockpit audio on a wing mounted action cam sounds pretty slick.

Hello Ed,

It makes us very happy to hear you say this. We try very hard to understand the market and develop products that "hit the mark" for what our customers would like to have in their planes, but hearing this confirmation is great.

You will enjoy both the panel mount unit controls and the excellent G3X Touch integration. In our RV-7A we really like being able to reach over and separately adjust the pilot music volume on the outer left knob while leaving the copilot music to his/her liking. The first time you do that as you are approaching an airport it will really drive home the importance of the dedicated volume controls.

Does this mean that you can send cockpit audio to be recorded on a Virb without cables? Cause that would be AWESOME! Cockpit audio on a wing mounted action cam sounds pretty slick.

Yes the GMA 245/245R Bluetooth may be paired to your Virb XE camera and provide intercom audio to the camera. We do want to mention, however, that this wireless link works much better for a camera inside the cabin than out on the wing, so you probably shouldn't expect this to work well in all external camera locations.

Thanks,
Steve

Will the 3D audio separate the primary and secondary frequency "direction" when receiving a radio broadcast from the SL-30 primary and secondary frequencies, or does this 3D audio only separate sounds from two distinctly different radio sources?

The 3D audio feature allows you to spatially separate two separate radios. It does not allow you to separate the active and standby frequencies of a single radio.

The GMA 245 is designed to be tray mounted. Full details will be in the installation manual which will be released very soon. Until that is released, you can get some good spec information for the GMA 245 and 245R here.

GMA 245 Dimensions: 6.3"W x 1.33"H x 8.09"D (160 x 34 x 205 mm) includes mounting rack and connectors

Thanks,
Brian

Another question...

On my current non-Garmin audio panel, the Bluetooth and one of the music inputs are "shared" on one input. So you can only have 2 audio sources at once. Is the Bluetooth input a dedicated source on this audio panel, meaning you could distribute 3 separate audio sources to 3 different areas?

And before the two place guys chime in, I'm thinking SXM for me, iPhone Bluetooth audio for the wife, and an iPad with a movie for the kid(s) in back.

Hi Ed,

Good question.

The GMA 245/245R support two wired and one Bluetooth music input, so you have 3 stereo audio inputs that are independent - even with volume.

You can definitely assign SXM music for the pilot, Bluetooth music for the copilot, and one jack for movie audio for the passenger positions. You are just the customer we had in mind.

If you and the copilot want to switch to listening to the same music source (or join the movie crowd), you can even each listen to the same music/audio source at different volumes to suit your tastes.

As shown above, in the G3X Touch audio panel configuration, you even get to assign the names on the two wired music inputs, so you can name one SXM and one MOVIE (or PASS for that rear jack) so you never forget what they are wired to.

You will also notice from the above two pictures that whether you choose a GMA 245 panel mount (like we did in our RV-7A) because you like having dedicated pilot/copilot music and intercom volumes knobs, or choose the remote mount GMA 245R to save panel space, you have the same great G3X touch integration and flexible music distribution.

Thanks,
Steve

Compatibility with 347

"Contributing to an easy and convenient upgrade path, the GMA 245/245R is rack and pin-compatible* with the GMA 240, GMA 340 and third-party audio panels for experimental aircraft.

I originally install the GMA347 for the digital playback and phone interface but Garmin never released the phone interface for sale :(
Considering this is a '300' series as well, would the 245 be a drop in?

Love the new products (especially the G5), but I do have one issue.

You call the 245R a remote panel, but it sure looks like it is still a panel mounted box with a usb port on the face. This takes up a lot of panel space all for a USB port. Why not have the remote version be designed as truly remote, buried in the sub-panel somewhere and drop the USB option?

Am I alone with this thought?

That's exactly the point...bury it behind the panel and if you need to get to the USB either mount a remote cable like you do with all the other brands of equipment that utilize remote USB's or make it handy to get to if need be...you wouldn't panel mount the remote version of this box...

Cheers,
Stein

Okay, gotcha. It's faceplate just looked to fancy to be designed as a remote. Made me a little confused.
Thanks Stein

...And now I see the mounting plate underneath it.

Where is the squelch adjustment?

Hello PixelWorker,

The GMA 245/245R are full digital audio panels with advanced autosquelch which use the latest high speed digital signal processing (DSP) technology to automatically adapt to the cockpit noise environment.

With some audio panels the autosquelch only works well when the engine is running because it is optimized for high noise environments.

The GMA 245/245R allows you to speak normally into the microphone without clipping whether you are pre-briefing your passengers in a quiet aircraft with the engine off, or operating with high engine power.

If you have ever used an intercom where you had to keep moving the mic or force your speech to get the intercom squelch to break, you will find the GMA 245/245R a very pleasant relief from that experience.

Thanks,
Steve

Stein..... was I not JUST talking to you last week about my desire for a remote audio panel with the touch? You knew something and I knew you knew something and you knew that I knew and yet you feigned ignorance. I am not playing poker with you my friend. Not like it matters....you will be getting my money anyway.....

Steve, you guys are amazing.

Hello,

The new G3X Touch V4.20 software that supports integration with both the G5 flight instrument and the GMA 245/245R audio panel is now available for download.

The new G3X V10.50 software which supports integration with the G5 flight instrument is also available.

Both of these software versions are being used to demonstrate these new products at Sun-N-Fun this week.

Thanks,
Steve

Rule #1: Don't play poker with Stein! ;)
Rule #2: Do trust him for great advice and a fair shake on avionics...I just did for panel rev3! Looking forward to playing with both the 245 or 245R on a mock-up, to see if either gets more of my $ headed his way...

Come to think of it, maybe poker would be cheaper...ahem! :p

Cheers,
Bob

I know the 245 and 245R can auto mute when radio calls come in, how about the ability to auto pause. I like to listen to audio books, and it would be great if radio calls would cause a pause instead of a mute, don't want to miss the exciting parts of the book. This is in reference to blue tooth audio sources where pause is supported.

By the time I finish my RV-10..

..Garmin will introduce a completely remote-mounted panel, controlled by telepathy, with start to finish auto pilot, automatic re-routing, based on real-time weather and heads-up displays for everyone; even in the rear seats! :D

Figured i would post under the GMA 245 thread. It doesnt look like this feature is supported by the newest audio panel.

I would love that the MON (Monitor) feature would tune out the Intercom as well as the other COM radio audio. The way I read the manual, it only turns off the other COM radio audio, but other passengers can still blab away.

Thus, i would love the intercom to automatically mute the other passengers automatically with incoming COM radio audio. I wonder why this cannot be done automatically for us?

Hello jchang10,

What you are asking about is the "Radio Mute ICS" feature. You will find that it is indeed supported, and is documented on page 13 of the current GMA 245 Pilot's Guide (rev C).
