KHSP, Hot Springs, VA, at 3,793' the highest public airport east of Mississippi. I was making a low approach before departure.

Highest Airport East of the Mississippi

It's Mountainair (2NCO) near Burnsville, NC at 4400 feet. It's a private strip for mountaintop development that includes a private golf club. Some of the most spectacular views in the country.

I've flown over a picturesque mountain top airport in CT. Listed as private wish I could land there.

It is higher than Ingalls Field at Hot Spring. In their terminal building Ingalls field claims that it is the highest airport east of Mississippi. May be it is the highest PUBLIC airport east of Mississippi. I did fly over Mountainair a few times. It is beautiful.

Ted, did you get Grundy (KGDY 2,304) when you were landing at Tazewell and Hot Springs?

My wife asked the airport manager at Tazewell how they got identifier KJFZ. His name is Jerry McReynolds. He said he submitted the typical things like KTAZ, but the government insisted on one more so he added "KJFZ" for "Jerry's F&@$/! Zoo" as a joke. Of course, that is what was assigned.

Note the approach markings on Los Alamos

Land to the west only and depart to the east only. More than usual need to call with intentions to let departing aircraft know you are coming and hold for departures. There is no tower to help with this conflicting traffic situation.

Sedona is similar....

Runway 03 is preferred for landings, subject to wind conditions.

Runway 21 is preferred for take-offs, subject to wind conditions.

Since the directions are "preferred" it is even a bit more confusing to visitors...
