Left UT after 2 years toward and aero eng degree and started my work life in the Air Force. Worked on F-4D WCS, F-16 Comm/Nav/ECM, and then F-117A everything electronic.

Got my FCC with RADAR endorsement and went to Delta Air Lines at DFW as a line mechanic, getting my A&P as well. Did everything there from autopilot to toilets to engines.

Then the big downsize lay-offs in 1993 put me in the semiconductor industry. I have been a Final Test Engineer and Field Service Engineer for various equipment manufacturers before I got tired of traveling and settled on Motorola Semiconductor which is now Freescale Semiconductor. Can't complain about working seven 12 hour days every two weeks.

What I did today.

I'm guessing the plastic Saturn didn't fare quite as well.

That'll buff right out.

Sadly the driver of the Saturn walked out of the ER a few hours later (he ended up rolling his car 8 times after impact) and the driver of the benz didn't make it :( thats the only bad part of my job...

Out of the 1000+ car collisions I have reconstructed < 10 had vehicles broken in two. The most recent was a BMW. Maybe we should ask the Germans. The BMW had a rear suspension subframe that tore the unit body structure open.

RR Grade Crossing collisions, tree and pole collisions are the most likely to result in the car exiting the collision in two pieces. BTW, I have learned to show this with my 3D animation software (It takes some "special" tricks).

I do have a pretty awesome job but hoping to make the leap into full time aviation someday soon :-)

^^^ btw... to this day I don't understand how that Mercedes "tank" was sliced cleanly in half by a Saturn doing 100+

I am a night lead mechanic for a large part 135 operation in Alaska. My job duties include just about anything you would expect from a A&P. My favorite thing is sheet metal, and I am the go to guy for that kind of stuff. Here is a recovery that two of us did last year. A temporary fuselage repair to the aft spar carry thru, a new wing, nose gear/engine and mount was needed to ferry it 800 miles out to our maintenance base. This aircraft was put back to work in about 5 months.

I manage and fly this aircraft. Lear 45. The aircraft is Part 91 and owned by five families. I've worked for them for fifteen years. They treat my co-pilot and I like family. It's a very rewarding and fun job.

Andrew, I guess when I worked in my garage on the 8 and didn't have the heater on in the winter, I had no legit complaining (errr wining) after seeing your outside work conditions. What was the coldest it got when you were working on that repair (two posts before this one)? Dave

After almost 16 years in the US I have been blessed to live the "American Dream" to the fullest. Get to fly a wonderful machine for a living and now build my own airplane. Now isn't that some awesome blessing!
I feel right at home here on VAF because of all the cool people with a purpose in life from the cube-dwellers to the space cowboys. We all need each other.

So thank you for all you do because without you I wouldn't be here either.

Many happy landings

My post at http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=81167 led to Pierre suggesting this thread so I'll expand on "A bit about me: I'm have an electrical engineer, computer science degree. I got my private ticket in 1987. Instrument rating in 1990. I've been a member of EAA chapter 105 for 18+ years and I'm currently on the board of directors. I've worked for Texas Instruments (Houston), Compaq Computer (Houston), Intel (Hillsboro, OR) and a small start up called ADDMM. I started working part time for Advanced Flight Systems shortly after the first flight of my RV."

I worked for Texas Instruments for 5 years designing seismic data acquisition equipment, the product was completed just as the oil industry had a decline and the equipment never went into production. While at TI, I also worked on a printer that did not make it to production. Joined Compaq Computer as employee 641, started working on the first DeskPro, 6 months later it was shipping. After 10 years at CPQ, and 10 products in production I moved to Portland OR area to work for Intel. I literally "wrote the book" on how to design with the Pentium Pro, Pentium II and several subsequent processors. Following many successful years in technical marketing, I worked in processor validation. ADDMM was a small company designing an innovative memory controller, funded by a large Japanese company: I was jack of all trades, master of none. Fun while it lasted, funding evaporated when the Japanese company lost money for the first time in their history. Then my full time job became building my RV-7A. :)

I had been talking to Rob for years about working for Advanced Flight Systems, just after the first flight of my RV-7A, he called and asked about my availability to work. I've been working for AFS as a contractor since then. Note that I planned to use a AFS-5600 years before I started working there! No picture of me now, at OSH 2011 one of Stein's guy's told Jenny Hickman that "Roy looks like a roadie for Blue Oyster Cult". Since then I've made my third hair donation to Lock Of Love........

Regards,

Andrew M

Most days were between 15 above and 10 below. The heater we made is visible, the plywood and tarp lean-to is not. Heat ducted to warm tools. One day It dipped to 25 or 30 below with a little wind. That day management snatched us out of there for a few days. "You have 20 minutes untill the plane gets there to rally your stuff, or wait until tomorrow" The support we got out there was tremendous, and we actually had a lot of fun.

I am an engineer at one of the greatest companies around, US Synthetic.
We make synthetic diamond cutters for the oil and gas industry as well as diamond bearings and drills for the coal industry.
Our presses generate over one million psi. It is the same pressure as flipping the Eiffel Tower over and resting it on the palm of your hand.
We are always looking for talented engineers.

Here is a picture of a few employees at a hike I led in Southern Utah.
We do at least one activity each month and the hikes are always a fun thing.

Our CEO and founder retired a couple of years ago. This is at his house. Yes, I've rode it quite a few times.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIjjWXstjZc

Nitro Circus came by his house one afternoon and we watched them film this. It usually is shot over the mountain or in the fields around work. It goes almost a mile and has about 15 seconds of hang time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSS7AZiAF34

Here is more on the work US Synthetic does in Kenya, Africa and you can get a flavor of the great leadership we have. I consider myself to be very lucky to have worked with this team.

A couple of weeks ago I forgot about a gift exchange at work and made up a quick "One Free Flight" ticket. Sean helped me take a larger group flying over the Christmas break. It was a fun day.

Cool job Milt! I have been designing medical devices for 35 years, currently working on new peripheral angioplasty devices. An EE by training, I first designed pacemakers, then external defibs, then implanted defibs and variety of other medical devices. And two years ago I spent several hours on a table just like yours getting fixed!

I'm a structural engineer (another one!). Most of the stuff I do is typical commercial and industrial work, but sometimes we get something a bit different.
Here are a couple of my more unusual projects:

The base structure for the ESA 35 metre deep space tracking antenna at New Norcia, north of Perth.
The antenna weighs 600t and its pointing accuracy is unbelievable:

WA Maritime Museum - under construction:

Finished:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7143/6713651935_8f5b5df462.jpg

... and holding up all the exhibits, such as Australia II, the yacht that finally won the America's Cup after you guys in the US had it for 132 years,
plus the triple non-stop circumnavigation yacht Parry Endeavour:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6713651727_a13dbdd222.jpg

It's interesting job. You never know what's coming up next. :)

PS. Those old dockyard cranes that are visible in the right background in the museum construction photo were used to service a fleet of about 50 US, British and Dutch submarines that operated in the Indian Ocean out of Fremantle during WWII. They are now part of the Museum Precinct together with an Australian Oberon class submarine on the slipway.

Looks like there is a few on here in the steel industry:)

I am the General Manager and part owner of a Steel Fabrication plant that works with a great group of individuals in the office, shop and field. We work in both the Commercial and Industrial market mostly in Alberta. We are very fortunate to have most of our work minutes from the plant thanks to the great Alberta market. We do all our drafting in house with 3d modeling software, fabricate and install the product. I can honestly say that I have always enjoyed going to work. Almost as much fun as building airplanes.;)

One of the many office building that we have done in Calgary and Edmonton. Note the stanchions and high lines for the 100% tie that the industry requires.

Flew these for a few years:
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-A10.jpg

Then spent seven more in these:
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-T38.jpg

Now flying part-time in B757s and 767s for a struggling major air carrier. (That really narrows it down, doesn't it?)
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-Sundog.jpg

But my real "fulfillment" job is flying warbirds, mostly older jets like the L-39:
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-L39.jpg
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-BFR.jpg

I do a lot of instruction, but also a fair amount of contract work, ferrying, and production test flying. For instance, when a client orders their vintage fighter-jet updated into the 21st century, I'm the the dude who gets to make sure the magic smoke stays inside the wires, the landing gear goes up and down, and the wings stay on at 6 Gs. Here's a sample retrofit cockpit. Not bad for a 1970s Soviet-bloc airplane:
http://www.warbirdalley.com/images/misc/DayJobs-panel.jpg

On my days off, I slowly build an RV-8, operate a video production company, take pictures, and fly airplanes! :D

Well let's see. I own an RV trailer & motorhome dealership in eastern Quebec. I also own a private 930 acres estate with my father, on which we operate an outfiting company specialized in trout fishing all inclusive 4* plans. We have 5 private lakes, 15 km of trails and a 2km sea frontage with a private beach to play with. :) It's located in eastern Quebec also, in the Apalachian mountains, and it's skirted by the St-Lawrence river.

I'm an ultralight and experimental enthusiast - builder of a Challenger ultra light and owner of a 2010 RV-6A. Right now, I've been working on a private airstrip at the estate, so we can acomodate pilot who'd like to come and visit us! ...And it's for me too!! My 40 X 28 hangar is now completed on the side of the strip. Still about a year to go before an aircraft will land on it.

Cheers.

Mechanical Engineer for a USAF (and commercial) contractor you've never heard of. We do aging aircraft support. I've spent a BUNCH of time on this: http://prometheus.med.utah.edu/~bwjones/wp-content/uploads/iblog/Rainbow%20joint.jpg

Which is the center wing/outer wing joing on a C-130. The center wing fitting is a piece of junk that has to be replaced regularly. I designed the tooling that the USAF Depots will be using to replace this part, hopefully faster and with fewer mistakes.

I also do structural testing, up to 250,000 lb on something up to 15 ft long. We've done wing joint parts for military and commercial companies (Piper Jet, which got canned right after we finished our testing...), composite stringer panels for a commercial jet maker, BIG bolts, 4" wide titanium friction plug weld coupons...you name it, I've broken it.

Also design and analyze aircraft components including lately a LOT of stuff for the MC-130W (now renamed AC-130W, so yeah, that means guns!). Mostly REdesign actually, to fix other's mistakes. I don't understand how some people sleep at night knowing they design airplane parts while being such awful engineers... :)

Best,

I will never forget one of my first Sun-n-Fun events. At that event, there was an older gentleman serving as a volunteer, helping folks get on/off one of the biplane rides. Most folks probably did not notice a little sign that explained who he was: Col. Joe Kittinger - the guy who almost broke mach 1 with no vehicle around him. Never mind the fact that wasn't even close to the hardest or scariest thing that guy did for us in his career.

Good reminder never to let the gray hair and handicap sticker fool you. Might just be a total bad-a$$ right there in front of you.

Pretty sure I meant what I said. I also happen to know a handful of "real deal" airline pilots who agree wholeheartedly with me, however, they're stuck. Golden handcuffs.

Obviously, being a.. commuter airline pilot.. (nice attempt at a dig, btw.) wasn't my goal, my father is at FDX and I thought one day, I'd fly purple too. However, sometimes things happen. Best laid plans and all that. Shame I couldn't be a "full fledged airline pilot" such as yourself. Oh well.

I had the option to change to a career that came with better QOL than what I had and even what I would have if I made it to "legitimate airline pilot" status, so I took it and couldn't be happier. :D

Tram, I'd be interested in hearing your advice/experience. When I think what I'll be doing for my "second career," I know it will involve aviation; just not sure in what form. For a while I thought I would pursue the airlines, but not so sure. I know some of the objective things - horrible initial pay, schedule, etc, but haven't talked to anyone recently in the game. One thing is for sure. EVERY time I set foot in an airport, 99% of the pilots look like they'd rather shoot themselves in the face than be where they are. The ones that don't look like that look to be about 21, fresh out of EAU, and thanking God to have landed the job. You can put up with a lot at that age. I guess everything's relative. I'll no longer be living in the desert in a tent for a year at a time right..?:D

I'll no longer be living in the desert in a tent for a year at a time right..?:D

That's because most of them had. The career for me, was miserable. A lot of that had to do with the pay. A lot of that had to do with the time away from home and I was pretty senior in my position and base.

For me, it boiled down to looking at the options..

My "plan" was to leave the regionals and eventually go to FDX or SWA. FDX was the goal since my pops works there and it's a 2.5 hour drive from my house.

I refuse to commute. A personal limitation.
I refuse to move. Another personal limitation.

So I started looking at a career change. What could I do and expect a better QOL than I currently have.

When I was considering changing careers I asked every guy who stepped into our cockpit the same question - "If you knew then, what you know now, would you still do this job?" Not one time did I get a yes. Literally. In almost 2 years of asking, no one said yes. The only person I met who thought I was out of my gord for trying to get out was an FO who has AVGAS in his veins and refuses to believe that the airlines are headed in a downward spiral.

My father is a wide-body CA at FDX. He cannot wait to retire. I was recently at a fly-in put on by FDX pilots and one guy made a joke about how "I needed to be nice to him or they wouldn't recommend me for a job there.." and I told the guy I didn't want to work there. Instantly about 6 heads whipped around and looked at me...

"What?"

"I don't want to work there.. I'm getting out of the 121 spiral ASAP."

There was a bit of an awkward pause and this one guy looked at me, reached out his hand and shook mine and said "That is the best thing I've heard all week!" and then it began a moan fest about the airlines and how they all wish they were getting out..

Sure, there are guys who love the job, obviously I stepped on one such fellow's toes a few posts up. His opinion will be vastly different from mine, I'm sure.

I was fortunate enough to be blessed with the opportunity to change careers, gain an instant improvement in my QOL and have the opportunity to surpass my "potential" earnings in the airlines, so I left and I couldn't be happier.

The truth is however, had I not found a viable option to leave, I'd still be an airline pilot plodding through the airport wishing I was anywhere but there. Fortunately I had an option. My .02 from playing pretend airline pilot for the last decade.

Just my opinion of course.

It'd probably be a great gig for a single guy who wanted to see "exciting new places" all the time. ;)

Hi Tristan,

Are you at Spacex Hawthorne?

If so, I'm next door at the Tesla design studio and an RV-8 hangared at KHHR.

Do you know Jeff Richichi?

Mark

Hawthorne it is. Not sure if you heard, but there is some guy that flies a yellow Lancair to work from French Valley daily. You can usually see him departing between 5 and 7 . . . :D

Richichi is awesome! We need to get together, another fellow SpaceXer is looking at building an RV7. He is in the looking over the plans stage and trying to figure out why is is so freaked out! We also have a small group of pilots that make Catalina runs occasionally. It would be good to have you along. There is a PM waiting for you :)

Day job ???

I work mostly evenings, I try to avoid having to set an alarm in the morning!!!

I work in Switzerland's Geneva Area Control Center.

I get to handle all traffic at FL250 and above in a sector that's about 150NM x 150NM.

Here's a picture of a typical work console taken last night during a graveyard shift at about 05:00 local. Pretty quiet at that time...

Thanks Bernie !!!

I work in the corporate office of a company that designs, fabricates and erects precast concrete structures. I work specifically in sales, preconstruction and project management. The best things about my job is that I'm still employed (construction industry has been bad) and I'm slowly funding my RV-10 build. The worst part is that it has nothing to do with aviation. :( Thankfully, access to VAF keeps me subdued and cooperative (moo).

Nice photography on the Hyatt. Architectural Photography was my day job until I became a full time Mr. Mom. BTW, taking care of kids is 10 times more work than any job I've ever had (and I've had some hideous jobs). If you have kids, give your wife a big hug - she deserves it! If not, give her a big hug anyway - can't hurt ;)

First job out of college (the first time) was safety engineering for the space shuttle main engine testing program at Stennis Space Center, MS. Then into the petrochemical industry, then into electronics manufacturing. Did a bit of teaching for OSHA and the US Army while at the Texas Engineering Extension Service. Had a construction business with the XYL, until I talked her into going back into practice.

Back to grad school in structural engineering, some years in building design and structural forensic engineering. Now I talk for a living, employed (as my boss says "not really working") by the trade association for the folks that make, bend, cut, and place steel reinforcement used in concrete. I still do a bit of structural design and forensics.

It seems that an RV-8 is in my future, with the planned start date of December 1, in my "two years to taxi" program. If I can't do it in two years, I can't start it. A guy has to know his limits. Did I mention that I've been remodeling my house for 7 years?

I've been meaning to post some pictures and now, I'm leaving.
I've worked as an aerodynamics researcher and wing designer for NASA for 33 years, and today, I retired. An old friend asked me to join him in his start-up adventure, and it is a chance to do something different and new for awhile.
But here are a couple of pictures of my most recent work at NASA.

http://www.hpaircraft.com/rv8/ACD12-001-013.jpg

This is a model with 7-ft semispan (1/8th scale) of a representative single-aisle transport (737-class) with a second-generation geared turbofan engine nacelle (bypass ratio 15). You can see the turbine-powered engine simulator in the nacelle. The model fan is 10.75" diameter. The wide-angle lens makes it look even bigger than it really is. It was tested in the 11 x 11-ft transonic wind tunnel at NASA Ames. The pink paint is pressure-sensitive paint, lets us measure the surface pressure over the whole model at once.

http://www.hpaircraft.com/rv8/wbn_over_cl052_if.png

Here are before and after pictures of the upper surface pressure distribution from my design optimization, where the wing shape and nacelle shape and position were simultaneously optimized. Cruise at Mach 0.785. Ended up with nice supercritical pressure distribution on most of the wing, and nearly shock-free inboard of the nacelle. The experimental results matched the CFD predictions extremely well, which doesn't surprise us much these days. But the model proved we can get the L/D we want, even with the big nacelle.

Eventually, I'll be able to post some pictures of the new vehicle we are working on at the start-up.

I see no one has posted in here for some time, so here's a bump!

I am currently in my mid 20's, I have been in Naval Aviation for almost 6 years (A long time right?) lol

I started out with an enlistment contract as an ATC'er, then in Boot decided I wanted to backseat in some of the Navy's platforms, since only Officers are pilots. Anyways, I ended up volunteering for another 2 years while in Aircrew Candidate and Water Survival school in Pens, FL and got my contract amended again (plus a $2k bonus!) to try my whits at Flight Engineer School, where the going drop out rate was near 3 out of 5. I went anyways, I was already a pilot and I had an AA degree, what could go wrong?

I ended up making it thru the school (2nd in my class ) and got orders to the Mad Foxes in Jacksonville FL.
I deployed twice over 3 years flying this
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/orion1.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/orion1.jpg.html)

Sitting like this

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/IMG_3335.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/IMG_3335.jpg.html)

And occasionally getting some stick time

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/100_0105.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/100_0105.jpg.html)

Taking old fashioned pictures like this (Im second from left)

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/image-3.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/image-3.jpg.html)

Flying with my friend and his wife while we weren't delayed (my flying is not what scared him, he lost cell reception... No FaceSpace updates...)

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/IMG_4175.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/IMG_4175.jpg.html)

Now, Im deployed again flying this guy in super duper secret places

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/image-4.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/image-4.jpg.html)

I love what I do, a lot! I instruct, test, deploy, teach, and more. I am not rich, but I love what I do and the Navy is a great place to work, good travel benefits as well!

I have been around the World 3 times. 16 Countries. Every Continent, minus the cold one on bottom... Maybe I'll fly an RV there someday? (I read about a guy flying his 172 there!)

Anyways, Its great fun and sometimes you even get to see some cool stuff and land with a tube full of smoke  (see- lots of electronics aboard)

I get to listen to Danger Zone and pretend I'm a Top Gun  (at Mach 0.45 usually)

I have met a few RV builders in the Navy and I hope to start my build soon!
Im coming up on my reenlistment, but it will be short lived- Im about a year and a bit away from finishing my BS in Aeronautics with ERAU and already have a few weighted letters of rec for Officer Candidate School. Airlines are tough, so lets see if the Navy will let me actually fly! After over 2,000 hours and over 5 years of sitting Center Seat you'd think I have a good chance... All they care about is a silly degree...

On my spare time I fly rickety old spam cans (and one really nice Cardinal owned by another avid RV enthusiast)
I like to drive my Z06, but I will most likely sell to finance an engine and prop someday!

I will most likely be a 6+ year builder, since I will build as money becomes available.
I'd like my RV-8 to look like this when Im all done

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll316/AirmanFrantz/ac0bca22-6652-4941-aaf7-91e00f846754.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/AirmanFrantz/media/ac0bca22-6652-4941-aaf7-91e00f846754.jpg.html)

So there you have it,
all the above is what I do to pay the bills (and save for my -8) and I love every day of it.

Jacob,
I sincerely appreciate what you do for our country. Despite loving what you do there are still sacrifices that you are making. Thank you.

It is hard to tell over the internet if it was tongue in cheek, but I will respectfully disagree with the "silly degree" comment. I If it were silly you would not have to work so hard to get it. The work it takes says something about you. It says you are willing to put forth the effort and achieve. Many people will not. Keep working on that degree, be proud of it. I will vote for that paint scheme on your RV.

Mr. Duke and Mr. Smith,

Thank you for the kind words- It never gets any easier saying "You're welcome" because it just doesn't seem to be the right response, so I usually say it is my pleasure, sacrifice an all.

As far as the degree goes, it's true it isn't silly... I just try to keep a humorous opinion of it because it has been taking so long. Work doesn't give up much time for studies that are "extracurricular". I am encouraged to get educated, but it is definitely a long hard process- the degree specifically with Embry Riddle is very demanding. I just say 'silly' because it seems like such a small thing standing between where I am now and flying right seat in the same aircraft I know almost EVERYTHING about (maybe more than the pilots themselves :D ) Classes and homework projects are like rivets, just keep on buckin'...

Thank you for your encouragement tho, I do appreciate them and I will be very proud to have accomplished quite a goal once I graduate!

Is the picture in your post from Lajes? Looks familiar but I hauled a lot of P-3 crews around to most of the places they went.

Because I couldn't pass the first class medical but could pass the third class medical I rode sideways for a long time on C-141's in the USAFR. Flight Engineers usually knew more stuff about their aircraft than the pilots. Pilots were the drivers but the engineers really owned the jet when it left home station.

In response to a related thread about talking to your aircraft. Yes, as I grapped my bags and headed to the crew bus there was always a quick thanks for a safe flight.

Working P-8 now. Going to be an interesting ship.

Hey- the one of 316 I think may be Lajes. I stole that picture from a freind since I don't have too many EP-3E pictures. They get all bothered when we take pictures of it, tho I assure you there is nothing classified about the picture or location, this time.

I love Center Seat, it really is an awesome place to learn EVERYTHING about this airplane (P-3 series), but learning the back end gear is another story... Thats what the Tech is for ;)

The P-8A is specifically what is pushing me out of a job now, but I won't hold that against you! haha joking. I am hoping I can ride out P-3s for a few more years, by then (when I do OCS) I will have a good chance of flying the P-8A, which will pretty cool.

Thanks, and best of luck with the Poseidon!

A late reply to NavyIBNFE, but I just wanted to say I have a great deal of respect for flight engineers after spending a couple days banging around the pattern with a really good one on a C-130 (ok, the whole flight crew was really good) at Little Rock AFB....I assume they Navy ones are even better!

I both like and hate these kinds of threads!

Love to see what everyone else does for a living. Hate that I really don't have a cool or fun job anymore, ...just one that pays the bills.

This is me from the good 'ole days. I was a stewardess/lifeguard /mechanic/load master/line boy on these ugly things for a few years (phrogs and Hueys at one time or another):

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/wildwilly/Jenny/Ken_W_1987.jpg (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/wildwilly/media/Jenny/Ken_W_1987.jpg.html)

Then, I worked as an avionics tech here:

http://r1.cygnuspub.com/files/cygnus/image/CAVC/2011/OCT/600x400/atsaerial_10410455.jpg

But that gig ended a couple of days after the twin towers came down and the bigs started parking jets, and deferring maintenance.

Its ok though, the pay sucked, and there was no chance of moving up.

My bachelor's degree and 20+years of aviation maintenance experience were not getting me a paying gig. So, I swallowed my pride and went back to school to get credentialed in a field that was hiring, ....and paying very well.

Now, I get to see people on what is one of the worst (if not THE WORST) days of their lives. In fact, sitting here, I get to see way more than I want to.

My job is not fun. But, it pays the bills. And, soon enough, I'll be free to do what ever I want and pay myself to do it:

What I do do is high end Audio/Video and Automation systems. I own my own company called A/V Consulting. Been pretty lucky to work completely off referrals... Designing and wiring BIG A/V systems and racks certainly is helping with the wiring and electrical design of the plane...
Here' a few Racks. As you can see, my guys and I are pretty picky about the wiring...

Retired at 42 years of age and very comfortable. No need to digress on what "I used to to do" as this thread is asking for the"day job."

Timely speaking, hanging out with my English Springer Spaniel every day and flying my RV is the highlight of my daily schedule; weather permitting. Crappy days-my ESP Zeek has me fulltime. Good days; my butts in the air!

Wow. So many incredibly smart, talented people here. Even the ones who claim "boring" jobs get my respect.

In a previous life I turned wrenches on pretty much everything IBM built in the 60s, 70s and 80s. From the S/360 and S/3 to the 308x and I even babysat a 3090 for a while. It was a lot of fun being the guy with the answers. Too bad the bottom dropped completely out of that business in a very short period.

I ran my own company for a while, but I feel much better now. Network engineer, technical manager, systems architect. Now I work for an enormous bank , and they don't let me drive the stagecoach. I haven't had an office outside of my home in ten years now. I work in infrastructure monitoring and alerting, and occasionally I'll have to mute a conference call so no one hears the air compressor. My desk is too much of a mess to ever take, let alone show, a picture.

Oh, and I have a sideline business producing and selling electronic kits to ham radio operators; it helps pay for the RV.

I was a cotton/hay farmer for 23 years before my brother in law talked me into the drilling business. I have never been employed or had a salary, always been a contract (daywork) hand. I represent the oil company onsite during the horizontal drilling of oil/gas wells. I work 14 on and 14 off. This works out great for my airplane building. During my 14 days on I live and work out of a mobile home. I am very fortunate as my rig is 40 miles from my home. This is the view from my office window.

I'm on the ACIS (Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer) Instrument Team. ACIS is aboard the Chandra X-ray Orbiting Observatory. We control the satellite, upload maneuver and science loads to the sat, get the data from the sat, process it and make it available to scientists.

So I drive an office during the day:

Hi Mike,

No can't say that it does. At present there is no Chris Anderson here at the CFA. There is a Craig Andersen but I don't think he's a pilot.

Retired at 52. My day job for the last two years has been building my 7a but I do work part time in the summer driving a shuttle in Rocky Mountain National Park.

My career job was Telecom Manager. I managed a very large school district network with 120 telephone systems. I also managed the data centers. After 911, the main data center had a biometric access denial system installed. I actually retired as a Technology Project Manager. It was fun.

Stumbled across this thread today..... Thought I'd post some pics... I definitely don't have anything that compares to some other people.. nothing involving flying really fast things during the day...

If the job is big enough I do... Palm Springs is easy.... esp if I fly (30 minutes). I have clients as far north as Bakersfield that I fly up to do work for... He's a pilot so I park in front of his hanger....
I don't do Control 4.. I'm a Crestron guy.... There's a lot of options these days in the Control 4 price range that IMO are better. Even Crestron....

What a great thread, I finally went and read the OP and the rules of the thread so I think I have an appropriate story and picture.
I used to turn our tax money into hydrocarbons in extremely satisfying and fun ways, but gave it all up to become a Stay At Home Dad.
But now that the last child is almost out of the nest, I guess I should call myself retired. So my day job is in fact occasionally sitting in a hangar drinking a beer.
Sometimes, it transforms to a night job: I needed to get night current, as well as evaluate my leading edge landing light installation tonight.
So I hit the runway three times at the appropriate hour, and then had 45 minutes to kill before Son Number One's indoor Lacrosse games started a few minutes away from the airport.
I walked over to the Gourmet Gas Station and bought a pint of brew, then back to the hangar to try a second iteration on the aim point for the landing light:

Usually it is worth it though:

The real hurdle I face is putting the money together to get into an RV-7A without having to part with too many toys, but I have a feeling the little bass boat is going to get the axe now that I've caught the bug again. I am living in East Tennessee these days, and want to get back into GA. I finally renewed my EAA membership.

There I was...March 22nd 2003, 0330 AM, Western Iraq, just completed a 1 hour scramble to support a Special Ops team in dire need of "Dixie Demolition" ie Bama ANG F-16C+'s dropping heavy Iron.
The fight to gain control of the Hadithah Dam in W. Iraq raged for three hours while we stayed overhead the elite warriors below dropping bombs and directing traffic with our Infrared Targeting Pods. My wingman and I departed the "active" engagement a bit "skosh" low on gas. We pointed our thirsty fighters to the nearest Tanker Cap, reaching it and the most beautiful aircraft you will ever see at Night on NVG's (or day for that matter), the KC-135 literally on kerosene fumes, to be replenished inflight, once again...

Thanks brudda...

I can share several stories as well, tankers saving our butts low on gas trying to put war heads on foreheads. More times than I can count. People may not see them as sexy, but no one kicks *** without tanker gas and I've seen some real feats of airmanship to put them selves in position to support the fight.

Mitel makes good stuff..to bad they dropped support for the 2000. I do I&R for a lot of Mitel systems ( mostly hospitality ) down here. Also Shoretel and Adtran, but Mitel is still great stuff.

Hi VAF!

Our company Wing is looking to hire for several open roles, including a Chief UAS Pilot. I'll post details in the job section of the forum (http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=168757) (click that to go there), but thought this would be a fitting thread to tell you about the company (i.e., my day job, when I'm not working on or flying RV's :) ).

Click any of the links below to see more detailed articles, videos, etc.

Wing is Alphabet?s (https://wing.com/) (i.e., Google?s) drone program. We?re building an aerial delivery system to carry urgently needed items across our cities in just a few minutes, while improving the safety and carbon footprint of our transportation networks.

A few videos/articles that have more details:

* Our drone delivery system provides radically fast (and cheap!) service to customers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xf6YOiYI7o), as well as helping grow local businesses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAnE6i4RaDI)
* We?re creating a ?UTM (https://dronelife.com/2018/11/30/wing-google-spinoff-combines-utm-and-drone-delivery-for-maximum-benefit-in-australia/) (Unmanned Traffic Management) Platform? -- basically ?Google maps for the skies? software to help drones fly safer
* Helping develop and demonstrate open-source RemoteID tools (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXeOiZVLENo&t=2s) that help the FAA meet their security needs while also maintaining user privacy
* Deploying our system to Europe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw1y7cGsJqg) (that's a presentation that tells more about us)

Many on our team come from manned piloting backgrounds as well as the RC hobby community, and we?re committed to building these new drone systems in ways that support the entire aviation community (that?s why we plan to make UTM software available for free to hobbyists, for example, as well as put ADS-B receivers on our drones so they always yield to manned airplanes), as well as keeping the future of aviation open and innovative (which is why we?re pushing open-source (http://www.janesairport360.com/article/10435/google-heads-consortium-to-integrate-utm-communications-technology-globally) solutions that let many companies both play well together and compete with each other)

Side hustle - I used one of my auto industry contacts to create my own line of ultra-premium quality aircraft cleaning products under the "SUPERBIRD" brand name. These SUPERBIRD products are engineered specifically for use on aircraft paint (aircraft paint is VERY different from automotive paint).

I work for a touring lighting company.

After a few tours with Paul McCartney and a stint with the Rolling Stones (and many others I've tried to forget about), I am now a Lighting and Media Server tech for WWE. Gave up the international touring to be home every week so I can build my RV-7.

I help build the set, make sure all the lights work, as well as manage all of the Media servers and the lighting networks for the show.

If you're ever at Raw or SmackDown, shoot me a message, I'll come find you and say hello.

I'm working with the Olympic team as their javelinhttp://www.pxleyes.com/images/contests/worst%20jobs/fullsize/worst%20jobs_4a76f5fd38ff3_hires.jpg catcher.

This is old, but it made me laugh. Hockey goalie, baseball catcher, jousting partner, wild weasel mission pilot, javelin catcher, these are jobs for a certain type of deranged individual who seems to like things coming at them fast. I was a right defenseman on our hockey team in college. One night, our goalie was sick so, what the heck, I put on the pads. How hard can it be? I found out just how deranged this type of person is.

Are you in Nashville?

This was taken in the eighties when I was an Instrumentation Engineer on the Space Shuttle. I was out at Edwards to dump the flight recorders. Good times while they lasted. Now I just work on my own personal "space ship".

Cool. And you do that from Ocean City? Either that, or you have one **** of a commute!

One **** of a commute is right. 40 minutes one way.

I'm sure we have mutual friends. I have lighting and set carp friends that have done those wresting gigs.
