One man was killed and another seriously hurt when a small, experimental, homebuilt plane crashed late Saturday about 8 miles west of the town of Yamhill, sheriff's deputies said.

Scene of fatal plane crash near Flying M Ranch in rural Yamhill County.

David George Simpkins, 79, died in the crash, said Lt. Ken Summers of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. Simpkins' son-in-law, Mohammed Brimo, was piloting the Vans RV6 plane, according to Summers.

The single-engine aircraft apparently went down as it neared a runway at the Flying M Ranch in rural Yamhill County.

"Witnesses said the pilot apparently lost control during landing, causing the plane to flip onto its roof, killing the passenger," Summers said.

The plane had taken off from Sandy, Oregon earlier Saturday afternoon.

There were no further details provided as to the injured pilot's condition.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
