First trip to Bahamas for spring break

We are planing on making our first trip to the Bahamas in March for spring break in the 10. Wife and 11 year old twins.

Any recommendations on where to stay ?

My plan is to spend couple of days at a couple of different islands.

Looking for relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, seashell gathering, maybe a little fishing. No shopping / tourist traps required.

Have Customs sticker, radio license, passports, APIS account etc all set up.

Also how big of a hassle is getting thru the airspace around Pensacola and the panhandle of Florida coast or is it better to plan on going inland north around that airspace ?

Thanks for your feedback.

Randy, we've flown the Panhandle route, cutting the corner over Apalachee Bay, multiple times and enjoyed flight following from Eglin & Tyndall when not on an IFR FP. No problems, FBO's at both PNS and PFN are most friendly...just watch the hump on PNS' 17/35.

During March, the LP cells that sweep across N America are still pretty numerous and strong, more like winter ending than spring arriving. If you're in the Bahamas for a week or more, you will probably endure at least one frontal passage down there, which brings surprisingly uncomfortable cool & windy (sometimes also wet) weather with it. For that reason, I'd concentrate my time from the Exumas southward as the Abacos really do suffer more from these fronts than the S & SE out islands.

You might find this thread to offer some suggestions about routing & destinations as this RANS builder has similar plans:

We flew down to Long Island last March and stayed here. http://www.stellamarisresort.com/
Great resort with their own airport and Customs. They also have a special deal for first time fly-in guests. Far from the tourist traps!:)

Another destination that others have flown to is Staniel Cay in the Exumas. We have not been there, but have heard good things about it and are planning to go down there this year. They have their own airport as well. http://www.stanielcay.com/

The Bahamas Tourism Ministry has a good promotion going on for private aircraft guests, right now. I think it can save you up to $300 on your hotel stay.

We landed at Ft. Pierce, FL to clear U.S. Customs on our way back to the USA. Customs was friendly and no hassle.
