Loose carb bowl screws

Today I got word of another loose carb bowl (MA4SPA). It appears that aircraft with long "snoot" air boxes are Loosening some carb bowl screws.
The bend over locking tabs just don't hold very well. When I was building, I was warned of this "common event?" The fix... Keep the distance between the FAB and the cowling air intake at least 1/2" and replace the screws with 10-24 X .750" allen cap screws, drilled for safety wire. and wire em up.
The screws are a tad hard to find. I found some at McGuckin Hardware in Boulder co. They are also online

Good reminder!

I had this happen on my Grumman many years ago, and now always look for safetied bolts in this location. When they get loose, the engine won't die when you pull the mixture!

Screw length?

Hi Frank,

Do you have a spec for the length of the screw? I'll order some up.

Thanks for the tip on this.

This happens with amazing regularity on certified aircraft with the MA4SPA Carb. I have a good friend who's an AP/IA that has found at least three in the last couple of years.
