How AWOS works (with pictures)

I got to wondering how these automated systems can detect "scattered" cloud coverage, and came upon this link. Pretty cool gear, but certainly not cheap.

...a "slight" chance of the symbol above it happening.

A * is snow and a solid circle is rain.
