Aluminum/Silver paint

I've never seen a paint treatment on fiberglass components that would fool anybody into thinking the 'glass parts were indeed aluminum, however, any recommendations on the very best paint available that most closely matches....or should I say "approximates" the sheen and luster of aluminum airframes?

How about this one from AirColors listed on Doug's main page.

Chrome paint

That stuff looks too cool. Does anyone know if it would work on an entire aircraft?

kind of pricey

That stuff is $1200 a gallon - kind of seems like a lot! How much would it take to cover an RV?

Rick,
I've not tried this on a large scale but am considering it.
It may turn into a wrinkle nightmare.

Look at TopFlight's Monokote for model airplanes. http://monokote.com

They have metallics, including chrome, and many other colors and they have been pretty easy to apply on smaller models.

Who knows? It might just be the ticket!

Monokote is ironed on to a model surface. I have used it over some fiberglass wing reinforcement on R/C models but I am not sure how well it would work on a large fiberglass cowl. It would be hard to not get wrinkles. Some of the jet model guys (big bucks for those things too) are using spray on Metal Kote II or for a stick on method Coverite's Presto. Go to:

http://www.bvmjets.com/

click on the link on the right for Metal Kote II.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXB231&P=0

for Coverite Presto.

or Flite Metal--which is another stick on method for fiberglass.

I would go for a spray method if the color was right.

fiberglass only

oh I thought he was looking for something to match the polished aluminum
I have not tested it but thought it looked pretty shiney , could work,
they painted a minivan with it :)

I have no idea about it but I looked at it once.. I am going with paint.. just
don't know which paint yet.. who does the best airbrush, I need a airbrush
guy for something I am planning.. I also know nothing about airbrush..

live and learn..

Danny..

It looks like Alsa makes aluminum (non-polished, like car wheels) too. That would be interesting for someone who isn't planning on 'keeping up' on polishing duties (going for the WWII aluminum look?).

Updated contact information follows:

Dear Rick,

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in the Alsa Corporation. As the ChromeFX System is new to the market we currently do not have a list of applicators to provide you with. Another avenue is MirraChrome which can be applied by any paint shop and will not require special equipment. Further information on this is available on our website. I have also provided you with the contact information to our local distributors who will also be able to assist in finding a good paintshop in your area who will be able to provide you with this service. If you should have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Reviving an old thread.

Rick,

Did you end up using Mirrachrome? How did it turn out?

I am curious about Mirrachrome process and the results as well.

How much would it be to Mirrachrome a RV-7 cowling, wingtips, and other fiberglass features?

Would it be durable?

Thanks.

I ended up applying grey AcryGlo. I did use "Flight Metal" on the tail. It is thin aluminum sheet with an adhesive backing but is difficult to work with, especially on a tip. Once it touches the fiberglass...it ain't moving! Still, it looks good where I put it and has held up very well for some time now.

There is another process I am curious about but the company has not responded to my inquiries. According to their website, the process can be applied on virtually "any imaginable surface." I'd love to see how it looks on an RV! Check it out: http://www.metal-morphous.com/
